POW in Canada WWII
« on: July 26, 2010, 02:14:23 PM »
I am wondering if there is a list of names that is accessable, as I am doing my family tree.   My Grandfather, and 2 Uncles were in both the one in Alberta Kananasis, and the one in Petawawa Ontario.  I do have a receipt with  my grandfather's prisoner of war number on it.. but nothing on either of my uncles.  They were Italian, and members of the Sons of Italy club, and that seems to be the reason why they were taken as POW.  Any information on where to look, would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Wydgett,

Do you know which camp your relatives were in (I assume Camp 130 and Camp 33F in Ontario)? You can try to contact the provincial governments to see if they can at least point you in the right direction. If you are in Canada and are able to get in touch with local military organizations they could also help.

The government should have documented most if not all of the POW's in the camps so you should be able to find something. If you need help getting in touch with any government organizations please PM me and I will help the best I can.

Hi Wydgett

My father was in both these camps plus in Fredericton for a total of about 3  1/2 years. He didn't like to talk about those years when he was alive so I started out knowing nothing but I have found much information via the archives in Ottawa including letters he wrote while he was in camp. I would be happy to answer any specific questions you have on how I attanied this information. I have visited the Kananaskis site in 2000 and have pictures (although there is little remaining)> Also there is a book called "behind Barbed Wire which is very good to read and if I recall correctly has some names in it
